Alcoholism

Who knows that one gets different types of alcoholics?

One would think alcoholics don’t/can’t work because they’re always inebriated.  Not true.   There’s the functional alcoholic who can and does work.

I have (had) a few alcoholics in my family, all who have been functional, it’s just that they were unable to function without alcohol… as opposed to not being able to function at all.

I am of the opinion that something really bad must have occurred in peoples’ lives for them to use alcohol as a coping mechanism.  In my family it was wrong choices in marrying the wrong people and not having the courage to undo it all.  I have firsthand experience of what that does to families.  The children take tremendous strain and suffer into adulthood because of it, and most of the time they also turn to alcohol in order to cope.

There are quite a number of saved functional alcoholics that I know of – one can clearly see it in the manner in which they speak and in their general mannerisms, and of course, by some of their topsy turvy doctrine, but most of all, one can see it it in their shamelessness which they call their “liberty in Christ”.

If one is so naive as to think that some do not read the Bible when they’re “filled to the gills”, one is sadly mistaken.   It is cold fact.  One gets all types out there, unfortunately.  It doesn’t mean that if one is saved that life hasn’t negatively  affected one in some way.

With alcoholics, it’s always a laugh or joke a minute… it’s their way of hiding the hurt and inability of dealing with the harsh reality that is their lives – past or present.

Today, sadly it’s either drugs or alcohol or even both which people cannot live without.  I see it every day, I experienced it as a child through various family members, I know the signs….. a person’s demeanour and language are a dead give away….

I currently live in the Western Cape Province which is the drug capital of South Africa.  For the first time in my life I am seeing the harshness, cruelty and destruction caused by drug and alcohol abuse. Meth addicts walking around with open, weeping sores on their bodies, marijuana users who are totally out of touch with reality….. alcoholics who make out as if their lives are great (when they clearly aren’t).

There are a lot of people out there who are hurting…. people without hope, people who think the solutions to their problems are found at the bottom of a bottle….. or many a bottle…. that is.

Saved people who do not know who they are in Christ, who are men pleasers, these are normally the reasons for the alcohol and drug dilemma in the body of Christ.

Sometimes (as my late father professed), one has to burn one’s fingers to learn a lesson in life, so unfortunately one has to leave some to their own devices, because they are ignorant as to how life works.

Alcoholics and drug abusers not only abuse themselves, but others too.  It’s a sad, sad situation…… truly it is.

“Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.” ~ Proverbs 31:6
